  3. The purpose of the
  4. clutch is to
  5. disengage the
  6. engine from the
  7. drive train while
  8. changing gears and
  9. to allow for smooth
  10. starts. 
  11.  
  12. The typical clutch
  13. consists of: the
  14. flywheel, the
  15. clutch plate and
  16. the pressure plate. 
  17. The clutch plate is
  18. lined on both sides
  19. with a friction
  20. material.  This
  21. material creates
  22. friction when the
  23. clutch is applied
  24. and allows energy
  25. to pass from engine
  26. to drivetrain. 
  27. Once the clutch is
  28. fully disengaged,
  29. there is no
  30. slippage, and the
  31. engine is connected
  32. directly to the
  33. gear box.
